Outgoing Study Abroad

Almost all of our students have the option of studying abroad as part of their degree.

Go Abroad University of Roehampton

Our partner institutions are based across the world, and currently include universities in New York and California in the US; Melbourne and Sydney in Australia, and in cities in Canada, China, South America and continental Europe.

Studying abroad has a huge number of benefits, including helping you develop new employability skills, gaining self-confidence and independence, making new friends and discovering new cultures and new language skills.

If you join an exchange programme there will be no new tuition fee costs and you will come home from your international study with credits towards your degree.

How do I apply?

First-year students wishing to go abroad should apply during their first semester at Roehampton.

If you are a January starter, please contact roehamptonabroad@roehampton.ac.uk for an adjusted deadline.

If you do not hold an EU passport, you will need to apply for a UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). This replaces the existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The card is free to obtain and you can use this card to access medically necessary state-provided healthcare when you are visiting an EU country of Switzerland. Medically Necessary Healthcare means healthcare that reasonably waits until you come back to the UK. Your GHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It may not cover all health costs and never covers repatriation costs. Make sure you have travel insurance as well as your card.

Your GHIC must be valid for your entire stay. For further information and to apply/ renew a GHIC for your study placement, visit the NHS website.

As part of the application process, you will need to research where you can and would like to go, and choose your three preferred partners. Please note that not all universities are suitable for all programmes – you should view the institutions available for your programmes of study.

Once you have chosen your three preferred institutions, you can start an application by visiting the programme page for one of your choices and clicking the 'Apply Now' button. You will then be invited to create an account. Follow the instructions that will be emailed to you, checking your junk folder if an email doesn't appear. The application will ask you to choose the semester for your study abroad. For September starters, this will be the Spring semester and for January starters, this will be the Autumn semester. If you are unsure, please see your programme convener(s) or email roehamptonabroad@roehampton.ac.uk.

The application consists of four questionnaires listed toward the bottom of the page under 'Application Questionnaires'. These will ask you for some biographical information, some information about your planned study abroad (including your three preferred partner institutions) and a personal statement. You will also need to upload a copy of your passport. We recommend you use Google Chrome to complete the questionnaires.

Your application is complete when you have submitted all four questionnaires. You will get a confirmation email once your application is complete.

After the application deadline has passed, Roehampton Abroad will contact your Programme Convenor for a predicted grade and approval for your request to study abroad.

The selection committee will then meet and students will be notified of all placement decisions by the end of April.

Health Insurance

If you do not hold an EU passport, you will need to apply for a UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). This replaces the existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

All students completing a placement outside Europe will need to purchase health insurance. As a minimum, an insurance policy should cover accident and illness, medical evacuation and repatriation. The details of health cover will vary depending on your host country.

Students going to the US or Australia will have to purchase health insurance for the duration of their exchange. This is a condition for obtaining a student visa in these countries. Insurance is normally purchased through the host university as part of the application process, although a private policy can sometimes be substituted. Details can be found on individual host university websites. Where health insurance plans are mandatory through the host university, you agree to purchase of this plan when accepting your exchange place.
