What is a disability?

The Equality Act (2010) defines disability as: “a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on the ability to do normal daily activities”, where long term is considered to be 12 months or more.

The term ‘disability’ covers a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) (e.g. Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, ADHD)
  • Blind or visual impairment
  • Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Mobility difficulties (e.g. wheelchair users)
  • Long-term medical conditions (e.g. Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME, Sickle Cell Anaemia, Epilepsy)
  • Autistic spectrum conditions (e.g. Asperger’s Syndrome)
  • Mental health conditions (e.g. depression, eating disorders, anxiety)
