Academic requirements

At the University of Roehampton, we welcome applications from academically qualified students worldwide. 

Along with a complete application, EU and international applicants are required to submit various supporting documents. These include:

  • Academic qualifications (certificate and transcript)
  • Valid English language qualification
  • Personal statement
  • Two references

English Language Requirements

If you are considering studying at the University of Roehampton, either undergraduate (BA, BSc, BFA, LLB), postgraduate (LLM, MA, MSc, MBA, MFA) or research (MPhil, PhD, PsychD) you must demonstrate that you have at least a minimum standard of English language proficiency.

All applicants that require a Tier 4 visa must also meet the minimum English Language requirements before we can issue a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS) that is needed to apply for a Tier 4 visa. 

If otherwise stated, English Language test results are usually only accepted if they have achieved in the last two years. For Tier 4 applicants, the validity of the test must be no older than two years from the date of issue.

Pre-sessional English

We run pre-sessional English courses for students who need to improve their English proficiency before starting an undergraduate or postgraduate course at Roehampton.

These courses can be taken instead of re-taking an English test, if you don’t meet the required levels listed below.

  • Undergraduate degrees – 6.0 overall with a minimum 5.5 in each component
  • Undergraduate degree (Nutrition and Health) – 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.0 in each component
  • Postgraduate degrees – 6.5 overall with a minimum 5.5 in each component
  • Postgraduate degree (Clinical Nutrition) – 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.0 in each component
  • Research degrees – 7.0 overall with a minimum 6.5 in each component
  • Undergraduate degrees - mapped to IELTs scores* 
  • Postgraduate degrees - mapped to IELTs scores* 
  • Research degrees - mapped to IELTs scores*

In partnership with Kaplan International, students can take the University of Roehampton KITE test, an easy to access, online English Language test which can be taken anywhere at any time.

Entry requirements

  • Undergraduate degrees - minimum 426 overall (Main Flight) with all four components at 396
  • Postgraduate degrees requiring IELTS 6.5 overall – minimum 459 overall (Main Flight) with all four components at 426
  • Postgraduate degrees requiring IELTS 7.0 overall – minimum 495 overall (Main Flight) with all four components at 459

Current students and offer holders can claim a £25 discount, reducing the price to just £65.

  • Undergraduate degrees - 80 overall with a minimum of 17 in listening and writing, 18 in reading and 20 in speaking
  • Postgraduate degrees - 89 overall with a minimum of 17 in listening and writing, 18 in reading and 20 in speaking

  • Undergraduate – total score of 51 with 51 in all subtests
  • Postgraduate taught - total score of 59 with 59 in all subtests

  • Pass in ISE II or above
  • Undergraduate degrees – 169 overall with a minimum of 162 in each component
  • Postgraduate degrees - 176 overall with a minimum 162 in each component (some schools require a minimum of 169 in each)

  • Grade C or above in English Language or 4 in the GCSE 1 - 9 grading scale
  • Grade C or above in English Language (first or second language) or 4 in 1 - 9 grading scale

SL grade 4 or HL grade 3 (Language A - first language) or SL grade 6 or HL grade 5 (Language B – language acquisition)

  • Grade 6 in the European Baccalaureate English component
  • Undergraduate degrees – B2 Communicator Pass
  • Postgraduate degrees – B2 Communicator High Pass
  • Research degrees - C1 Communicator Pass

You can use on the following High School English results as proof of meeting our English Language requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate level, as they have been completed in the last five years.

Applicants from the countries listed below, who have successfully completed a degree taught and assessed in English in the last five years, will also be considered for admission.

This list is not exhaustive and other qualifications may be considered when you apply.

  • Cameroon grade C O/A-level in English
  • Nigeria WAEC grade 6 or better
  • Ghana WAEC grade 6 or better
  • Hong Kong Level 4 (syllabus B) in the HKCEE
  • Indian Standard XII 70%
  • Malaysia grade C or better in English language (1119) in SPM
  • South Africa grade C in the High School Certificate
  • Sri Lanka grade C Sri Lankan A-level

UKVI list of majority English speaking countries

If you are a national of one of the countries below, you do not need to prove your English language ability for Tier 4 purposes. You may also be exempt if you have an academic qualification equivalent to a UK degree from one of these countries.
