Professor of Immunology advances research on children's mental health

Fulvio D'Acquisto, Professor of Immunology in the School of Life and Health Sciences, is making significant contributions to children's health research through his collaboration with the NIHR D-CYPHR initiative (DNA, Children + Young People's Health Resource) and PANS PANDAS UK.

In a recent interview with D-CYPHR, Professor D'Acquisto described the current period as transformative for immune research, stating, "We are in an incredibly exciting time for immune research. The field is advancing rapidly, with new technologies allowing us to explore immune function in unprecedented detail at molecular and cellular levels."

Professor D'Acquisto’s work underscores the importance of integrated approaches to tackling complex conditions such as PANS (Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections).

He explained, "One of the most promising developments on the horizon is the potential for combined therapies that target both the brain and the immune system – addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of these disorders."

Drawing on an extensive research career that began with studies on T cells and autoimmunity at Yale University, Professor D'Acquisto elaborated, "Studying mental and physical health together is critical because they are deeply interconnected, as evidenced by conditions like PANS and PANDAS. My research has consistently shown that immune function can influence behaviour and mental states."

The collaboration with D-CYPHR represents a significant milestone in advancing research on children's health, particularly in understanding the interplay between immune function and mental wellbeing. This initiative reflects Professor D'Acquisto's commitment to exploring the immune system as a gateway to holistic mental and physical health.
