Mohanads Research on Gender Diversity in Construction

Our Senior Lecturer in Built Environment, Mohanad Abobakr, is a healthcare architect and specialist in healthcare façade design and is pursuing his research in his current role. His research focuses on the performance of hygienic surface materials and healthcare facade design, specifically their biological and physical parameters. Mohanad has published journal papers and conference articles across multiple fields, including healthcare design and architecture, hygienic surfaces, Façade design and construction management.

In September 2024, Mohanad published his work in the International Journal of Construction Management by Taylor & Francis, on the topic Gender diversity in construction: demystifying the pipeline leaks in Australia, United States, United Kingdom and Brazil. The study investigates persistent gender imbalances within the construction industry by analysing workforce representation, gender pay gaps, and education trends across these countries. This research uses quantitative data to map "pipeline leaks" from educational settings to career stages, identifying structural and cultural barriers that contribute to female underrepresentation. By examining these issues across different economies, the study offers a pathway to actionable, collaborative strategies for enhancing gender equity and industry inclusivity globally.
