Syeda Khanom studied MA Special and Inclusive Education and graduated in 2014, from the University of Roehampton, London. Her new book, which focuses on identifying and supporting children with conditions such as autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and Down syndrome, addresses the critical gap between policy and practice in many educational systems, particularly in developing countries like Bangladesh.
This book is aimed at helping teachers, parents and other professionals identify special children according to their distinctive characteristics, types, learning strategies, and perceived needs, to nourish their talents.
Drawing inspiration from the Salamanca Statement of 1994, which advocated for "education for all," Syeda highlights the challenges faced by teachers and parents in providing effective education to children with special needs. The book offers practical guidance on identifying the unique characteristics of these children, along with learning strategies tailored to their individual needs.
We caught up with Roehampton alumnus Syeda Khanom recently to discuss her inspiration behind this book and the way Roehampton helped carve her professional journey. Khanom is a passionate advocate for inclusive education and hopes the book will serve as a valuable resource for professionals and families. Read the blog here.
Dr Deborah Sabric, Deputy Dean of the School of Education says: “Syeda's book contributes to our understanding of children with special needs broadly but also in the context of developing nations. It is wonderful that her experiences at Roehampton provided a strong foundation for the work she is doing today!”
