The Sustainable Engineering and Technology team delivered several virtual sessions for the Engineering Development Trust over the summer. EDT's vision is a society where all young people can develop the STEM skills, knowledge and experience they need to take control of their futures and change the world around them. A total of 504 people participated in the sessions, 51% being female.
Sessions that the team delivered:
- What can we learn from old buildings about designing for climate change? 75 students attended.
- Designing Buildings for Climate Emergency. 49 students attended.
- Building a Sustainable Future. 39 students attended.
- Sustainable Construction Materials. 34 students attended.
An attendee said: “I have never really thought that much about architecture and how it adapts to new requirements, learning about how buildings should be put at certain angles to maximise sunlight was a really interesting and different information to learn about.”
Another said: “During the live session on sustainable construction materials, I gained a deeper understanding about concreate and how the material is so easy to use but we don’t consider its emissions, but Tsioulou talked about many more sustainable alternatives like Geopolymer concrete. I found this session made me more inquisitive and allowed me to think outside the box. When learning about a sustainable future I learnt about teamwork and problem solving and how architects and civil engineers and mechanical engineers all must work together for an outcome that pleases all needs.”
