Top tips for attending our Taster Day

There is so much for you to explore at our Taster Day.

Throughout the day our student ambassadors (you won't miss them in their yellow hoodies!) and staff will be happy to answer any questions you have.

When you arrive, please head to the library to register. Registration opens at 10am.

Please note photography will be taking place at the event. The images and footage will be used for marketing future events on our digital and print advertising. If you have any concerns, please speak to a member of staff when you arrive.

  • 11.45am - immediately after the taster session, leaving from outside the Chapel
  • 12.45pm - leaving main entrance and arriving at Whitelands for 1pm

Our School of Continuing Education works uniquely with the broader schools in the university to support and deliver technical and vocational training.

They also provide higher and degree level learning, with academic support for students who wish to extend their learning.

This talk is a great chance to hear more about these programmes and how they can help you flourish and succeed in your learning.

Your academic host:

Scott supports in the management of all Foundation programmes and pathways, providing learner and tutor support throughout the year and convening a number of modules on the Life Sciences and Education courses.

His previous experience includes Programme Leader for HN Sport and Exercise Science at University Centre Colchester in Essex, as well as teaching across a variety of courses in Education, including the BA Education and PGCE in Lifelong Learning. Prior to working in Higher Education, Scott worked in professional sport primarily as a Sport Scientist and Student Placement Supervisor within a Premier League football academy.

Taster session: The Psychology of Money: Why we make bad financial decisions

Your academic host:

Dr. Ekaterina Ipatova is a Senior Lecturer in Finance and Programme Leader for Economics at Roehampton Business School, where she has taught since 2016. She has also lectured at institutions such as London Business School, Queen Mary University of London, and Bayes Business School, specialising in finance, investments, and quantitative methods.

Her research explores experiential learning in finance, financial literacy for Gen Z, and women-led SMEs, particularly the lived experiences of mother entrepreneurs and the policy changes needed to support them. In May 2024, she founded FAWB (Financial Awareness and Wellbeing), a student-led social enterprise raising financial awareness among Gen Z, currently expanding in collaboration with the London School of Economics.

In this taster session, Dr. Ekaterina will introduce key concepts in finance and economics, offering insights into real-world applications and how financial literacy shapes economic decision-making.

Dr Mary L. Shannon is a writer and Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Roehampton, London. Mary's new book Billy Waters is Dancing: Or, How a Black Sailor Found Fame in Regency Britain (Yale 2024) tells the story of Regency London’s forgotten Black celebrity. Taster session: Lawmakers and Lawbreakers: Criminal Justice in Retrospect

Your academic host:

Dorothy Kwagala-Igaga, senior lecturer and Deputy Head of school 

Legal Practice: Dorothy qualified as an advocate in Uganda in 2002 and practiced in Kampala before moving to the UK in 2006. She practiced as a criminal defence advocate at the Public Defenders’ Association of Uganda. She also taught at the Law School, Makerere University Kampala. 

Teaching: Dorothy teaches the Law of Tort, Tax Law and Medical Law and Ethics at undergraduate level. She joined Roehampton Law School in June 2016 from Kingston University where she taught Tort and English Legal System and Legal Method between 2011 and May 2016. 

Expertise in: Tort Law, Medical Law and Ethics, Tax Law.

Your academic host for the taster session:

Join Anthony Barlow, Programme Leader and Programme Lead for Geography Education at the University of Roehampton, for an insightful session on our Primary Education (QTS) programme. With Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and experience teaching primary-age children in Bolton and Hillingdon, London, Anthony brings a wealth of expertise in teacher training and primary education.

His research focuses on how children and teachers understand their local environment, and he is a trustee of the Geographical Association. He is also the author of Mastering Primary Geography (2019, Bloomsbury).

This session will cover course details, entry requirements, and career opportunities, with time for questions at the end.

Your academic host:

Dr Carolina Gaona is a Senior Lecturer in Education with over 15 years of experience spanning research, industry, clinical, and educational settings, particularly focusing on disability. 

She trained as an Educational Psychologist and primary school teacher, working with children with special educational needs and disability (SEND) for several years. She gained an MA in Special and Inclusive Education, funded by the EU, and a Doctorate in Education. Her research interests center on SEND, with a particular emphasis on autism spectrum conditions and transitions to post-secondary life. Dr Gaona has contributed to several publications in this field. Her expertise lies in advocating for the inclusion of children’s perspectives in educational planning and policy, aiming to enhance the support systems for individuals with SEND.

Your academic hosts for the taster session:

Chrissy is the Head of Speech and Language Therapy at the University of Roehampton, developing the new Undergraduate programme launching in September 2025. With 22 years of NHS experience, she’s worked with diverse client groups and emphasizes team collaboration and person-centered care.  

Formerly Head of Education at a hospice, she led simulation-based learning for palliative care. Chrissy is also a PhD student at the University of Chichester, researching narrative in end-of-life care education.

Your academic host for the taster session:

Lilian Martins da Silva joined the University of Roehampton in January 2024 and has over 20 years of experience in architecture and sustainable building technology in both Brazil and the UK. A chartered engineer and member of CIBSE, she specialises in whole-life carbon strategies, low-energy building design, and environmental certifications (BREEAM, LEED, WELL).

In this taster session, Lilian will explore the role of sustainability in the built environment, sharing insights from her extensive industry experience. Attendees will gain an understanding of key design principles and how sustainability is embedded into real-world projects.

If you'd prefer to walk from Barnes Station, our main campus is about 15 minutes away.

You can walk to Whitelands College (Holybourne Avenue, SW15 4JD) from main campus, it takes about 12 minutes.

We have free parking available on campus. 

Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. When you arrive at the main entrance, you will be given a permit to display in your car.
