Queen's Building, Southlands CollegeThe University Senate is the principal academic body of the University, and acts as its management committee. Senate therefore considers proposals about the academic standards and processes of the University, and the operational aspects of strategy agreed by the Council. Terms of Reference of Senate include resource management, therefore the University’s annual Budget is considered by Senate prior to Council approval. Senate is charged to monitor, and maintain, the highest standards of academic and business management at the University, within approved strategy.

The current composition of Senate brings together all the University’s senior managers, both academic and administrative, together with additional academic representatives from the Departments and the President of the Roehampton Students' Union. There is also a student representative, making a total of some forty Senators in all.

Meetings of Senate are held monthly during term time, but are not usually held in December, April or August, during vacations. Senate reports to Council at each Council meeting, summarising the major business addressed since the last Council, as well as presenting proposals formally for Council’s approval. In its turn, Council reports back to Senate regularly on its major business and decisions.
