Come along to our Live History, History and Politics Taster Webinar taking place on 19 May 2021. The webinar will be hosted by Higher Education Advisor Mandi Kaur and Senior Lecturer Dr Caroline Sharples.

Caroline specialises in modern German history, specifically memories of National Socialism and representations of the Holocaust.

Caroline will explore German Responses to Kristallnacht. Did ‘ordinary’ Germans care about the persecution of Jews during the Third Reich? This session examines people's reactions to the violent Kristallnacht pogrom of 9 November 1938 - the 'Night of Broken Glass' that saw synagogues set on fire, Jewish businesses smashed, and a significant number of Jewish men beaten and sent to concentration camps.  This session summarises historians' debates on this topic, and draws upon a range of primary sources including police reports, memoirs and diary entries to explore a range of emotional expression. In the process, we will consider the challenges historians face when trying to evaluate public opinion under a dictatorial regime.
