The School of Psychology is celebrating the release of a new academic publication, Developmental Psychology (Third Edition), co-authored by Dr Virginia Lam alongside Dr Rachel Gillibrand and Dr Victoria O’Donnell.
This fully revised third edition is structured around three thematic sections: Introduction to Developmental Psychology, Cognitive and Linguistic Development, and Social and Emotional Development. The text integrates a range of pedagogical features, including opening examples, reflective prompts, ‘going further’ questions, In Focus highlights of key research, and sections on Research Methods, Lifespan Implications and Education. Richly illustrated and supported by a comprehensive glossary, the textbook is designed to support student engagement and independent learning.
A standout feature of this edition is a dedicated section of ten real-world case studies. These span the full human lifespan and include topics such as attachment and later relationships, gender dysphoria, multilingual families, ADHD, dyslexia and dementia. Each case study is supported by individual and group activities, providing educators and students with practical tools to apply theory to diverse developmental scenarios.
The textbook will serve as part of the reading for Roehampton’s new MSc Developmental Psychology, while also becoming a key resource across undergraduate and postgraduate developmental psychology modules.
Dr Lam commented “We’re proud to offer a comprehensive and accessible resource that reflects both foundational theory and the latest developments in the field. The case studies and applied features make it ideal not just for academic study but for professional reflection too.”
The MSc Developmental Psychology launches this autumn and is designed for students aiming to deepen their understanding of psychological development across the lifespan, including those preparing for careers in education, clinical and counselling psychology, health, and social care.
