Phil Walker, Chair of the University's Council has been awarded Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in this year's King's Birthday Honours list. The award is in recognition of his commitment and service to education.

Phil has had a rich, impactful career across the public and private sectors and continues to drive real change through his voluntary roles. He is a sought-after leader who selflessly gives his time to not-for profit organisations, at the highest governance and advisory levels, but also with hands on mentorship and inspiration for students, young entrepreneurs, and business leaders.

He was also Chair of their Education Committee, 2008-2011. His involvement highlights his commitment to mentoring and fostering leadership. He has selflessly given time to speak with and inspire students at several business schools, and is passionate about our students and providing opportunities for those from less privileged backgrounds, acting as a mentor for many students and as an unwavering advocate for widening participation students with businesses.
Phil said on receiving his award, "I would like to think this award recognises the importance of education in general and teaching in particular."
Professor Jean-Noël Ezingeard, Vice-Chancellor said "We are delighted that Phil has been recognised for his contribution to education. Over the five years he has been Chair of our council, he has contributed in significant ways to the development and growth of our University, and also championed the importance of higher education in this country both as a means to develop knowledge and skills but also as a contributor to our economy. We are proud to have such an advocate for education and young people as our Chair, and look forward to continuing working together on our shared vision, of providing opportunities for those from less privileged backgrounds."
