Roehampton’s Business and Law students given a career boost

The Faculty of Business and Law’s ‘Career Bootcamp’ took place over three days last week and was an opportunity for students to get involved in activities to boost their careers.

The main highlight of the Career Bootcamp was the on campus, ‘Yes you can’ talk and Q&A with Honorary Professor Miranda Brawn. Miranda has a vast range of experience in business and law and is a multi award-winning diversity, equity and inclusion leader who has won over 100 awards. Miranda is a former banker and finance lawyer, who was one of the first women on London’s trading floor, with experience at JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs.

Miranda, a TEDx speaker, podcast host, success coach and media contributor, spoke to a packed audience about her career, gave mentoring advice and tips on how to succeed. She also answered questions from our students and took photos with them at the end of the talk.

The second part of the event included a panel discussion and Q&A, where students had the opportunity to hear from Roehampton alumni on how to succeed in their future careers. Students were especially interested in hearing about how to handle rejection, match short-term and long-term career goals, manage diversity and inclusion challenges, and contribute to the common good.

Other activities on the three-day event included a business competencies workshop, talks on communicating confidently, job hunting techniques as well as internship, part-time job and volunteering opportunities with our careers team, and a barrister talk with Senior Lecturer and Barrister, Dominic Carrington. Interest in all the events was significant, with online events attracting an audience of over 300 students on average.

Brunella Gaviria, a third-year marketing student intern who helped co-organise the event as part of her internship, said: “It was such a rewarding experience to organise this bootcamp and be an organiser rather than an attendee! These events are great for helping students to build their confidence and strengths and to learn from the best and most importantly have some fun.”
