Dr. Jerome Boyd Maunsell is the author of a biography of Susan Sontag published by Reaktion in 2014, as well as essays, reviews, and articles on her work. Susan Sontag’s Tangential Classics, edited by Laura Jansen of the University of Bristol – in which Jerome’s most recent work appears – brings together international practitioners, biographers and scholars to examine how classical echoes filter into Sontag’s writing in tangential and oblique ways. The volume – with contributions from nine writers from diverse fields – directs readers’ attention to a twentieth-century thinker who invites a markedly different perception of antiquity and its influence on our thought: at once captivating and light, provocative and uncertain.
