Construction Management covers the development, conservation and improvement of the built environment and it ensures the design, construction and operation of buildings and other built facilities meet business, client and end user needs, and operate within financial, environmental and safety constraints.
The course covers how to manage a team of built environment professionals and collaborate with other practitioners to ensure that buildings and other facilities including services are constructed on time and budget with desired quality, health and safety and sustainability considerations.
Digital technologies are embedded in the curriculum and are a key part of the learning and teaching along with vocational skills. Design and construction methods are evaluated considering the social, ethical, legal, environmental, and economic factors relevant to the construction management disciplin
You will develop your skills to undertake the main duties and tasks of a Construction Site Manager, which are to:
- Ensure that safe systems of work are in place on their site and that all staff and operatives on site adhere to those systems and safe standards of behaviour
- Manage productivity on site so that the project is completed on time
- Manage the activity on site in a way that adheres to contract and cost constraints
- Ensure that the site has minimal impact on the environment and local community
- Manage interfaces between the various stakeholders associated with the site To ensure that the project is completed to the specification and quality demanded by the client
Learning & assessment
Learning and teaching strategies are underpinned by project-based learning, philosophy and supported by the project and case studies provided by the industry.
You wiil develop your independent learning skills through research and inquiry-based approaches and team building and collaboration skills through group working in interdisciplinary.
There will be minimal use of lectures which will be used to develop knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. Key learning takes places via workshops, seminars and group working.
You will be allocated a Personal Tutor for each year of the apprenticeship, who will be the first academic point of contact who will advise on academic issues, signpost you to wider areas of support for mitigating circumstances, counselling, health and wellbeing concerns and careers advice as needed.
They play a crucial role in ensuring that any issues are addressed timely so you progress with your studies smoothly and complete your apprenticeship successfully.
How you'll be assessed
You will be assessed using a combination of strategies, such as the submission of technical reports, lab reports, essays, in-class open and closed book tests, online assessments, and oral presentations.
The programme includes both formative assessment, with respect to interim reviews and feedback / feedforward and summative assessment, which will be carried out in accordance with the university’s assessment policy.

Applying
Entry requirements
- Level 4 Construction Technician Standard.
- Technician status or the equivalent with the industry’s recognised professional bodies.
- HNC in Construction or equivalent qualifications and commensurate industry experience.
- Entry to the Degree Apprenticeship in Construction Management requires a relevant Level 4 qualification in a construction-related discipline, therefore the programme differs from other degree apprenticeships as it begins at Level 5 and extends over three years including the end-point assessment period.
- You will also need Level 2 English and Mathematics.
You must be employed in an appropriate apprenticeship role to be eligible for this course.
Additional requirements: Interview with Apprentice, Employer, Programme Leader and Director/Head of Apprenticeship (including Skills Scan, Functional Skills equivalency check, recognition of Prior Learning.
