Skills

Make a difference to young children’s lives with a Teacher Degree Apprenticeship (QTS).

This course gives you the knowledge and skills to carve out a sustainable career in the education sector working as a primary school teacher.

On our Teacher Degree Apprenticeship (QTS), our priority is ensuring that you graduate with a professional skillset. This incorporates;

  • Studying modules to develop both your subject knowledge and understanding the art of teaching.
  • Our teacher training and professional modules cover behaviour management, special educational needs (SEN) and English as an additional language (EAL).
  • The course includes 24 weeks' school placement experience, giving you hands on experience.
  • These three strands will ensure that you are ready for the practical realities of teaching. You will focus on your subject of choice, giving you the tools to teach in an area you are passionate about and enjoy.

The Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) awarded to graduates is, first and foremost, a qualification to teach in England, however is also recognised globally.

In a 2023 report, Ofsted rated Roehampton's primary-age courses as "Outstanding". The inspection was conducted by nine of His Majesty’s inspectors and three Ofsted Inspectors. The University’s primary-age phase courses, that currently have 673 trainees, scored “Outstanding” for overall effectiveness, quality of education and training, leadership and management. Anthony Barlow

'Open Spaces, Open Minds' is my favourite Roehampton motto. We are an open-minded, diverse and welcoming community here and the university's campus and colleges support this. No two days are ever the same in education! Working with teachers, schools and students is all about making the educational experience and life-chances better for all children. They are the future, and we are tasked with helping them understand the world better. My research focuses on student and pupil understanding of where they live. What’s special about Lambeth? Hounslow? Ealing or Merton? Everywhere has a ‘story’, and I love tapping into this as it is about us, our community and the perspective we take as insiders or outsiders if we are new to London. I was new to London once as I came here to Uni. I taught KS2 in schools in London and in my hometown of Bolton, near Manchester. I'm a walker and cyclist and love a building, a park as well as a mountain or forest. I have too many books and still buy an old technology called CDs. I am heavily involved in our subject community and am Chair of the Early Years and Primary Committee of the Geographical Association. You can hear more about my passion for geography in this podcast here

Pablo Mayorga

Hi, I'm Pablo and I'm a senior lecturer in primary mathematics. I completed a PGCE in 2007 then worked as a class teacher in south London. During that time, I also had the opportunity to take on a number of other rewarding roles, such as CPD Leader, Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Year Group Leader, and mentor to NQTs and student-teachers. In my third year as a teacher, I started on a part-time MA in Mathematics Education at King’s College London, which reinforced my growing belief in the link between theory and practice. My favourite part of my job is supporting students to develop the key skills, knowledge, and confidence that they need in order to become great teachers. My research interests are children’s development of proportional reasoning and teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching.

Lynda Chinaka

Hi, I'm Lynda and I'm a senior lecturer in computing education at Roehampton. I have been teaching here for four years and my favourite thing about the university is working with a staff team that supports and prioritises the wellbeing and development of students. As a senior lecturer I enjoy meeting a variety of students who have made a life affirming, and in some cases, life altering decision to pursue a career in teaching. There is nothing more inspiring then to be part of that story.

I am interested in computing education in primary settings and building confidence in teaching all elements of the computing curriculum. Ensuring practice and pedagogy that intersects with the identities and experiences of all learners. Computing creativity for everyone!

Assessment

Push yourself further with real-world assignments.

Throughout the course, you’ll experience a wide range of assessments that enhance your understanding and practical skills, while giving you a taste of practices within the workplace. These include:

  • essays
  • presentations
  • practical assessments
  • portfolios
  • lesson planning
  • reflective tasks

You’ll leave Roehampton with an in-depth understanding of both the theory and the hands-on applications of working with young children, ready to take the next step.

In school of education, we prepare our students for enriching careers within the modern education system. We have a rich 180-year history and have been providing higher education to women for longer than any other university in the country.

Specific entry requirements

Please read this courses's specific entry requirements here.

If you have found an employer for an apprenticeship, their apprenticeship levy may mean that this will pay the course fees. Candidates who find an employer will be paid on the unqualified teachers’ scale for the duration of the course.

If you are an employer and would like to offer apprenticeships at your organisation, please get in touch with us by emailing apprenticeships@roehampton.ac.uk.

We can provide you with all the information and guidance you need to set these up.

Information for employers

The apprentice will be employed by you, the organisation for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Apprentices must be employed for at least the duration of the apprenticeship, which will typically be between 12 to 48 months.

The apprentice will have the same employment rights as other employees and will be paid a salary, receive paid leave for study, complete coursework and attend university classes, usually once a week or in a block delivery.

As an employer, you will need to identify the mentor for the apprentice, who can support apprentice and attend tripartite reviews with apprentice and Training Provider (University of Roehampton). This will take place on termly basis and will give an opportunity to discuss progress of your apprentice.

Lastly, as an employer you will need to cover the funding for the apprenticeship programme.

As an employer, if your pay bill is over £3million, you are required to pay the Apprenticeship Levy to HMRC. You will be able to put these contributions toward the cost of a degree apprenticeship.

If your contributions have been exhausted, the government will pay at least 95% of the fees for you. You will need to cover the remaining 5%.

If your annual pay bill is less than £3million, you will not be contributing towards Apprenticeship Levy. However, the government will pay at least 95% of the fees for each apprentice you have. You will need to cover the remaining 5%.

Your apprenticeships can be funded by a levy paying employer transferring up to 25% of their unused levy to a different employer. For more information, visit GOV.UK.

If you are an employer you will need to create an account on the apprenticeship service. This will allow you to

  • Receive the funds to put toward your apprenticeships
  • Manage your apprentices
  • Set up payments to your training provider

As the employer you will pay the training provider directly the 5%, if applicable. HMRC will pay the provider the 95% of the fees directly.

This funding can be used to pay for the training of your apprentice, however it will not cover their wages, so you will need to pay for that.

For more details, visit GOV.UK.
