Learning & assessment

You will engage in six hours of learning per week, during term time.

Two hours will be focused synchronous sessions, which will be delivered online. These sessions will focus on the building of key conceptual knowledge, skills and behaviours relevant to your role as a teaching assistant.

Two hours will focus on the application of your knowledge, skills and behaviours into your practice. Learning will extend into the context of your day-to-day work where you apply ideas and concepts within your own practices building confidence as well as your ability to develop as a reflective and reflexive practitioner.

Authentic tasks focused on the application of knowledge, skills and behaviours with children in your schools, observations of practice in your school, discussions with mentors and more senior peers and reflection on your application of knowledge will form key learning on the job.

An additional two hours will include independent work (reading professional articles, podcasts, data delving) to prepare for focused synchronous sessions. These activities will provide opportunities to develop your breadth and depth around key ideas, frameworks and practices linked to your work with children, in classrooms and in wider school communities.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment is more development in nature. You will be required to demonstrate your understanding in your practice. 

Summative assessment will come through reflective journal entries and the submission of a multi-component portfolio that details and evidences the skills, knowledge, and competencies you've developed over the course of your apprenticeship.

Career

With this Level 3 apprenticeship you could:

  • Progress to a higher level or specialist teaching assistant
  • Become a learning support assistant
  • Examinations officer within a school or college
  • Work as a private tutor for individuals or small groups of children
  • Become a fully qualified teacher or SEN teacher with additional training

Entry requirements

  • GCSE in English and Maths Grade C (4) or higher OR able to achieve Level 2 English and Math qualifications while on the programme
  • Employed as a Teaching Assistant by a school that is willing to support you
  • Have experience in this role or a similar role
  • Have held UK residency for the last three years
