Our Art Psychotherapy Short Courses offer a comprehensive introduction to the subject of Art Therapy, a process that combines the creative process of making art with psychological theory and techniques.

These courses cover essential theories and models from Jungian 'Analytical Psychology' and are an ideal way to explore more about training in this discipline and understanding the links between theory and clinical practice. These courses are facilitated by a qualified and experienced Art Therapists.

All our Arts and Play Therapy Short Courses at Roehampton are experiential in nature. In our classes, you'll have the opportunity to take part in hands on activities, completing exercises and techniques to put theory into practice.

Who are these courses for?

These courses are perfect for participants looking to develop their understanding of Arts and Play Therapies. They may be of particular interest to people working in health and social care, education, the arts or with a general interest in the subject. They would also be of interest to those looking for a career change or planning to undertake formal training.

Please note that the completion of any Art Psychotherapy Short Course does not allow you to practice Art Psychotherapy or guarantee a place on the qualifying Master's degree. Although these courses are experiential in nature, they are not intended to provide therapy, as such, to participants.

Introduction Course

This one-day introductory workshop will introduce participants to some of the fundamental principles which underpin art therapeutic practice. Participants will be invited to engage in a range of art-making processes to explore their own personal symbols and unconscious imagery in a safe and playful environment. Links will also be made to theory and clinical practice, and how insight derived from the workshop might develop the clinician’s understanding of non-verbal communication.

This day offers experiential learning about art therapy and is ideal for anyone interested in training to become an art therapist, as well as artists looking to explore art-making in a unique setting. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing suitable for making art, as this will be an active session.

Intermediate Course

Our Intermediate Art Psychotherapy course is a ten-week course that combines theoretical lectures with experiential activities. Throughout the course, you’ll be introduced to some of the key theories and models from Jungian 'Analytical Psychology' including exploring the unconscious mind, myths and symbols and family archetypes. The course begins and ends with a longer half-day session providing a space to get to know your classmates and reflect on your learning experience. Each week you’ll have a two-hour evening session which will be a mix of theory and experiential learning.

Courses are available both onsite and online and are facilitated by qualified and experienced Art Therapists. This Intermediate course is suitable for participants with no prior knowledge of the subject or who have taken part in our Introductory sessions.

At the end of the course, you’ll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend a minimum of 70% of sessions and complete the informal assessment process.

Advanced Course

Our Advanced Art Psychotherapy course is a ten-week course combining theoretical lectures with experiential activities. It builds on the Jungian 'Analytical Psychology' theories covered in our Intermediate Course, delving into the topics in more detail. The course begins and ends with a longer half-day session providing a space to get to know your classmates and reflect on your learning experience. Each week you’ll have a two-hour evening session which will be a mix of theory and experiential learning.

Courses are available both onsite and online and are facilitated by qualified and experienced Art Therapists. This Advanced course is suitable for participants with some prior knowledge and understanding of the subject or who have taken part in our Intermediate sessions.

At the end of the course, you’ll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend a minimum of 70% of sessions and complete the informal assessment process.

Summer School

Our Art Psychotherapy Summer School provides you with an opportunity to engage in a deep and intensive exploration of the art therapeutic process over five consecutive days of experiential work. During the course, you will be invited to engage in a range of art-making processes to explore your own personal symbols and unconscious imagery in a safe and creatively facilitating environment. You’ll explore notions of shared or collective experience, along with how Jungian theory may inform art-making and the art-therapeutic relationship.

Courses will be held on site at our Roehampton Campus and are facilitated by qualified and experienced Art Therapists. Our Summer Schools are suitable for participants with no prior knowledge of the subject or who have taken part in our Introductory sessions. You’ll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend a minimum of 70% of sessions and complete the informal assessment process.
