These Short Courses introduce the theory and practices of Music Therapy, exploring the emotional qualities of music and how these can be used in a therapeutic setting.

These courses cover essential theories and models and provide an overview of music therapy practice in the UK, making them an ideal way to learn more about training in this discipline. These courses are delivered by qualified and trained Music Therapists.

All our Arts and Play Therapy Short Courses at Roehampton are experiential in nature. In our classes, you'll have the opportunity to take part in hands on activities, completing exercises and techniques to put theory into practice.

Who are these courses for?

These courses are perfect for participants looking to develop their understanding of Arts and Play Therapies. They may be of particular interest to people working in music, theatre, the arts, health and social care, education or with a general interest in the subject. They would also be of interest to those looking for a career change or planning to undertake formal training.

Please note that the completion of any Music Therapy Short Course does not allow you to practice Music Therapy or guarantee a place on the qualifying Master's degree. Although these courses are experiential in nature, they are not intended to provide therapy, as such, to participants.

Introduction Course

This one-day course will introduce some of the theoretical concepts related to Music Therapy. Throughout the day, you’ll see examples of case studies and take part in practical, experiential sessions.  You’ll also get the chance to examine session material, giving participants the oppopants to disunity to discuss works and apply the theory in practice. This workshop combines theoretical lectures with interactive experiential activities, making it ideal for anyone looking to explore the topic or refresh their knowledge.

Intermediate Course

Our Intermediate Music Therapy course is a ten-week course comprising of interactive seminars on various aspects of practice and theory, including video material, followed by workshops and interactive experiential sessions. The workshop segment will introduce the elements of clinical improvisation, whilst the experiential portion will provide a direct experience of group music therapy, the balance between these two elements shifting to the experiential as the course progresses. The course begins and ends with a longer half-day session providing a space to get to know your classmates and reflect on your learning experience. Each week you’ll have a two-hour evening session which will be a mix of theory and experiential learning.

Courses are available both onsite and online and are facilitated by qualified and experienced Music Therapists. This Intermediate course is suitable for participants with no prior knowledge of the subject or who have taken part in our Introductory sessions.

At the end of the course, you’ll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend a minimum of 70% of sessions and complete the informal assessment process.

Advanced Course

Our Advanced Music Therapy course is a ten-week course combining theoretical lectures and seminars with experiential activities. It builds on the theories covered in our Intermediate Course, exploring topics in more detail and delving deeper into the role of a Music Therapist. The course begins and ends with a longer half-day session providing a space to get to know your classmates and reflect on your learning experience. Each week you’ll have a two-hour evening session which will be a mix of theory and experiential learning.

Courses are available both onsite and online and are facilitated by qualified and experienced Music Therapists. This Advanced course is suitable for participants with some prior knowledge and understanding of the subject or who have taken part in our Intermediate sessions.

Summer School

Discover the improvisation techniques used in music therapy and encourage exploratory thinking and a deeper understanding of the emotional qualities of music. Over five days, this course will provide you with an insight into music therapy practice, introducing a wide range of topics that will give you a comprehensive introduction to the profession of Music Therapy. You’ll take part in an intensive five-day experiential class, including direct experiential learning about the Music Therapy MA Programme at the University of Roehampton. The course will also use case studies to illustrate work across a range of clinical settings, linking these with the psychological theories which underpin clinical practice. Additionally, we’ll also explore the types of challenges clients face, providing a holistic overview of the subject.

Courses will be held on site at our Roehampton Campus. Our Summer Schools are suitable for participants with no prior knowledge of the subject or who have taken part in our Introductory sessions. You’ll receive a certificate of attendance if you attend a minimum of 70% of sessions and complete the informal assessment process.
