Benjamin Zephaniah

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Benjamin Zephaniah.

Zephaniah was awarded Honorary Doctor of Letters by the University of Roehampton in 2019, receiving his award at the Royal Festival Hall on London’s Southbank.

He was a passionate advocate for reading, an innovative and outstanding performance poet, an accomplished storyteller, a musician, an actor, a radio presenter and an advocate of numerous social causes.

He was a pioneer of the performance poetry scene in Britain. He gave voice, through his work, to those who did not have a voice in mainstream poetry and writing. He inspired reading for all, especially young readers and reluctant readers. He worked tirelessly for causes that aim to enhance community and bring people together.

The work and legacy of Benjamin Zephaniah speak strongly to Roehampton’s social mission and diverse student body. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this sad time.
