Deborah Jermyn, Reader in film and television in the School of Arts and Digital Industries, was recently interviewed by the BBC on the publication of Patricia Field’s memoirs.
Field is one of the most celebrated and divisive costume designers in film and TV, whose work featured in productions such as The Devil Wears Prada, Emily in Paris and the award-winning Sex and the City.
As a part of the interview, Jermyn explored some of the most iconic and controversial looks styled by the New York City-based costume designer and discussed why her work is both so contentious and admired.
Jermyn said ‘Field crystallises many of the arguments that have long been at the heart of debates around fashion and clothing. On the one hand, her labour is accused of being frivolous and trivial. On the other, it is embraced for the space it affords for creativity and experimentation.
'Her work is not driven by a desire to capture high-street trends, but rather exploring expression and imagination'.
