It was a busy week of events for the Faculty of Business and Law students, as the popular employability week returned to Roehampton between 23 – 27 October 2023.
There were plenty of opportunities for students to hear from industry experts, through employer-led sessions and talks about career opportunities open to them as Roehampton graduates, as well as opportunities to chat with alumni about their experiences since leaving university.
For law students, the informative in person talks included a session with Simon Carr, on choosing the CILEX route to becoming a lawyer and a unique story from practising barrister and associate lecturer in law at Roehampton Law School, Mr Sena Agbotse, plus an overview of the new SQE with the University of Law.
Online there was an interactive Q&A session with top-tier law firm, Clifford Chance where students had a rare insight into what makes a successful application, The Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn Bar Course Scholarships talked about the pathways to the Bar, diversity and support. Students also heard from Citizens Advice, Wandsworth about how volunteering will get them experience of social welfare law issues and advice in practice. In person, The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple attended the membership/accreditation bodies expo to engage with interested students.
For business students, there was an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and connections at the membership/accreditation bodies expo, where students could take part in the enterprise business challenge and hear about international and placement opportunities.
There were packed events in Chapman Hall, with the commencement Address of Honorary Professor Miranda Brawn, Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Business and Law. This was followed by a discussion about the changing world of work with Michele Prigent, Senior Vice-President of Global Distribution Group, Paramount, Alexander Rawlinson, Managing Director of Ludlow Thompson and Imowo Enang, Senior Lecturer at Roehampton. The panel talked about the importance of networking and building contacts, following organisations on social media and having a strong CV. Panel members urged students to define and write down for themselves what they were interested in, set objectives and be bold and dare to fail.
There were opportunities for students to enhance their LinkedIn profiles and interview skills and enjoy screenings and discussions of the films Moneyball and American Factory in our campus cinema in David Bell and a workshop ‘Can you afford to save the planet?’ with Simon King, from Eden Seven about the business and personal benefits of sustainability. Students were also able to hear from Roehampton alumni on how to build their career with a panel discussion and a Q&A.
Sunitha Narendran, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law, said “It was wonderful to see so many students attending the sessions across the week. Employability week really is a great opportunity for students to prepare for their future careers. A huge thanks to all the external employers and staff for making the week a huge success”.
