Tuition fee payment scams: how to protect yourself

Criminals are increasingly targeting students with scams aimed at stealing tuition fee payments. These may appear as fake discounts, fraudulent payment links, or messages pretending to be from legitimate organisations. Please take a few moments to read our guidance on how to protect yourself and your money.

Bank Transfers

The University does not accept direct bank transfers, however, you can still make a bank transfer through Convera or Flywire, who process these securely on our behalf.

International Students: UK Bank Accounts

If you are an international student and plan to pay your tuition fees by instalments, we strongly recommend opening a UK bank account as soon as possible. A UK bank account may be required to set up a Direct Debit payment plan, and the application process can take time after you arrive in the UK.

Please ensure your bank account is active and ready before enrolment to avoid delays in setting up your payment plan and completing your enrolment.
If you are unable to open a UK bank account before enrolment, please contact the Finance Team by logging a ServiceDesk ticket as soon as possible to discuss the payment options available to you.

Please note that digital or online banks operate exclusively online and offer banking services through mobile apps or web platforms, without physical branches.

Which digital bank is right for you?

It is important to note that some of these mobile banking services set monthly or daily limit on cash withdrawals and payments before applying a charge. It is therefore vital to go through the terms and conditions before you decide to open an account.

It is also important to check whether a digital bank is regulated and authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to ensure that its conduct is monitored and controlled, and whether it is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) which could entitle you to a compensation of up to £85000 if the digital bank goes out of business.
