Strengthen your confidence in using English for academic study.

This short course is tailored for international learners and speakers of English as a second language to develop the communication skills needed to thrive at university. Over eight weeks, you’ll learn how to read academic texts with confidence, express ideas clearly, take useful notes, and participate effectively in discussions. With a blend of interactive teaching, guided study and hands-on tasks, you'll build your skills, week by week. By the end of the course, you’ll feel prepared for university-level work in any subject area, with improved academic writing, critical thinking and communication skills.

Course overview

Whether you are preparing for your degree or seeking extra support during your current programme, this course guides you through the essential academic communication skills used across all subject areas. Immerse yourself in a supportive and engaging environment where you will enhance your reading, writing, listening, speaking, critical thinking, and research skills.

Each week combines one hour of self-guided study with two hours of live online teaching - a lecture and an interactive workshop, allowing you to learn at your own pace, while practising new skills in real time with expert tutors and your fellow learners.

Across eight weeks, you will explore how to approach academic texts, write clear and structured paragraphs, take valuable notes from lectures, and contribute your thoughts and ideas confidently in seminars. Our interactive workshops provide a supported space to practise discussions, writing tasks, debates, and presentation skills.

Who is this course for?

This course is open to all prospective and future students and does not require current university enrolment. While it is not accredited or linked to IELTS scores, you will receive a certificate of completion with at least 70% attendance. By the end of the course, you’ll feel more prepared for degree‑level study, equipped with practical academic skills you can transfer to any discipline or future programme.

Please note that the completion of this course does not guarantee progression onto any University of Roehampton degree programmes.
