Academic English is an eight-week online course designed for international students and anyone using English as an additional language who wants to strengthen their academic communication skills before starting or during university study.
You'll develop essential skills needed for success at university, including reading academic texts, writing clearly, taking effective notes, participating in seminars, and communicating your ideas with confidence. Through a combination of live online teaching, interactive workshops, and independent study, you'll build your abilities step by step in a supportive learning environment.
By the end of the course, you'll feel more confident studying at university, with practical skills that you can use across many subject areas.

Whether you're preparing to start university or looking to strengthen your academic skills alongside your studies, this course introduces the communication and study skills expected at university.
Over eight weeks, you'll develop your academic reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills while learning how to engage effectively with university-level learning.
Each week includes one hour of self-directed study and two hours of live online classes, consisting of a lecture and an interactive workshop. This flexible format allows you to learn at your own pace while practising new skills with experienced tutors and fellow students.

- Read and understand academic texts more effectively
- Write clear, well-structured academic paragraphs
- Take useful notes from lectures and learning materials
- Develop critical thinking and independent learning skills
- Participate confidently in discussions and seminars

Who is this course for?
This course is designed for future and current students who want to develop their academic English skills before or during university study.
You do not need to be enrolled at a university to join this course, making it ideal for students preparing to enter higher education, international applicants, foundation year students, or anyone looking to build confidence in academic communication.
While the course is not accredited and is not linked to IELTS preparation or testing, learners who achieve at least 70% attendance will receive a certificate of completion.
Please note that completing this course does not guarantee a place on a University of Roehampton degree programme.
