Purpose
The Centre for Society, Culture, and Social Change (CSCSC) offers a structure through which to facilitate interdisciplinary research within and beyond the humanities and social sciences – incorporating research from across diverse fields such as philosophy, theology, religious studies, literature, history and classics, sociology, criminology, and international relations – in order to promote practical solutions to both theoretical and real-world problems and concerns, underpinned by a commitment to inclusivity, social equality, and access to culture.
The Centre for Society, Culture, and Social Change has a track record for world-leading research supported by a diverse range of funding streams, including the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Leverhulme Trust, the British Academy, and the Wellcome Trust, to name a few.

Drawing on the multidisciplinary expertise of a team of philosophers, theologians, literary and cultural critics, historians and classicists, and sociologists and criminologists, Centre members conduct high-quality, world-leading, and interdisciplinary research to address pressing cultural and social issues on a range of subjects – from gender and sexuality, crime and violence, to education and citizenship, and migration and human rights, among many others.
We are an outward-facing community providing members with a platform to engage a range of external stakeholders and partners in co-designed and/or collaborative Research and Knowledge Exchange activities. The work we have done in this context is both local and national, and our many partners across the cultural, education, and heritage sectors include Shakespeare’s Globe, The National Archives, Keats House, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Wandsworth Council, Cassell Hospital, Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, Fenland Heritage Network, Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens, South and East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership Arts Council, University of the 3rd Age (u3a), Tyndale Society, the Centre for Information Modelling, the Society for Antiquaries, and Operation Noah, to name a few. We are always keen to develop existing partnerships and to explore the possibility of new opportunities.
The Centre also hosts a thriving research student community and trains and develops Postgraduate Research Students for a variety of academic and non-academic career paths. Potential applicants from relevant areas are strongly encouraged to reach out to prospective supervisors and/or mentors (see the list of “Research Staff” below).
We actively seek to develop and engage networks of collaborators who align with our mission, to shape our research and its policy and practice implications. We are committed to making positive change in our local, regional, and national and international contexts, and we welcome researchers and partners from across our disciplines whose research work can help us to impact and enable positive change in the world.
