Modules

Year 1 Year 2 Placement Year Year 3 Foundation

This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost your employability even further. If you choose this route, you will take the placement following year two of your course, and then return to complete your degree.

A placement year is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable work experience, to build on the career skills we will teach you on this degree. The connections you make on the placement will improve your career prospects further, and equip you with the skills you need to secure graduate-level employment.

How we support you

The University's Placement and Work Experience Team are experts at helping you to secure a placement. They will work closely with you from the start, helping you research potential employers, discover placement opportunities, create and pitch your CV, and will coach you to perform well in interviews. We aren't able to guarantee a placement, but our sector-leading advisors will give you the best possible chance of securing one.

We understand that your plans might change once you start your programme. If you decide not to do a placement, you will have the option of completing the three year version of your programme.

Whatever your choice, you will have access to many opportunities for work experience through our Placement and Work Experience Team, and access to face-to-face and 24/7 online careers support.

This course is offered as a degree with foundation year – a four-year programme which provides an additional foundation year at the beginning of the degree, that will give you academic and practical experience, as well as the skills you need to ensure you are equipped to successfully complete your chosen degree.

Skills

Accredited by the Association for Nutrition, this course gives you the knowledge and skills to carve out a sustainable career in the health sector.

You’ll gain a strong foundation in the science behind good nutrition, disease, treatment, and prevention.

During your time with us, you'll explore:

Principles of human nutrition
Awareness of public health
Research and analysis, and how to effectively communicate
Practical laboratory skills, including food analysis and evaluation

You’ll work on core subjects within nutrition and have the opportunity to shape your degree around your interests and ambitions.

Your employability is our priority from day one. An optional paid work placement gives you the opportunity to gain professional experience, or study abroad between Years 2 and 3.

Learning

Experience a dynamic, contemporary curriculum in state-of-the-art facilities.

Working in both small groups and individually, you’ll enjoy a mix of lectures and practicals as you work through progressive modules, including:

Nutrition of Population Groups: Investigate how various life stages influence nutritional needs.
Food Science: Gain practical insight into the science behind food production, quality and safety.
Psychology and Sociology: Learn about psychology’s role in eating behaviours
Advances in Nutrition and Health: Delve into recent breakthroughs in nutrition, including the impact of ‘omics’ technology, gene-diet interactions, and the significance of diverse nutrients.

In Year 3, you’ll have the chance to shape your own studies by conducting research on a self-selected topic. This enables you to explore and develop current knowledge in a chosen area of nutrition and health before you graduate.

Enjoy a personal and practical approach to your studies.

You’ll work in exceptional learning facilities, including:

• Food laboratories equipped for sensory analysis, tasting booths, microscopy, and more.
• High-spec computer suites, including a dietary analysis computer package, supported by a team of expert laboratory and IT technicians.

Other ways of learning include: small classroom seminars, lab sessions, case studies and workshops. This increases your contact time with your lecturers and creates a supportive learning community where you can excel.

You’ll learn through practical activities as well as lectures, with discussions, presentations, teamwork, and feedback playing a key role in your studies.

The National Student Survey (NSS) gathers students' opinions on the quality of the courses which helps to: inform perspective students' choices, provide data that supports unversities to improve the student experience, and support public accountability.

This programme recieved more than 92% satisfaction rate for the teaching and is also ranked top 5 in London for Nutrition and Dietetics with regards to teaching and academic support.
