The PGCE Secondary at the University of Roehampton is a respected route into secondary teaching, designed for graduates who want to become confident subject specialists and make a lasting impact in schools
Rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted (2023), the programme supports you from the start of training through to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status and into your Early Career Teacher induction.
Roehampton has a long history of teacher education. Our four constituent colleges were founded between 1841 and 1892, and that heritage continues to shape the way we prepare new teachers today. Alongside this history sits a clear focus on the realities of modern secondary education. You will train in schools serving diverse communities and explore what it means to teach your subject in ways that are ambitious, inclusive and relevant to young people’s lives.
The course has four clear strengths: strong subject-specific pedagogy, professional studies that help you understand the wider responsibilities of teaching, carefully structured placement experience that builds your confidence and classroom skill over time and an experienced tutor team there to support you at every stage. You will be taught by experienced tutors who know their subjects well and understand what makes a difference in the secondary classroom. You will also be supported by strong school partnerships and high-quality mentoring, with clear expectations and guidance that help you progress week by week.
The programme is subject to periodic inspection by Ofsted and follows the Department for Education’s requirements for initial teacher training. To gain the PGCE, you will need to pass all taught modules at Level 7 and successfully complete the placement component, which is required for recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status. Where Level 7 resubmission opportunities are used and a Level 7 pass is not achieved, work may be reassessed against Level 6 criteria, which can lead to the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education exit award.
Did you know?
Roehampton has a long-standing commitment to training educators that began in 1841, with a long tradition of preparing educators who go on to teach across London and beyond.
Today, that legacy continues through strong school partnerships, expert mentoring and an Ofsted-rated secondary teacher training programme.
Modules
Professional Studies and Teaching Experience (Core, Lead Partner and Apprenticeship,SCITT)
This module will introduce you to research-informed, practical approaches to important aspects of professional knowledge. These include: behaviour management; safeguarding; assessment for learning; adaptive teaching; literacy; numeracy; special educational needs; inclusion and pastoral care. Students will learn in cross-curricular groups and a number of sessions will be led by expert practitioners in local schools.
The module should be read in conjunction with the Teaching Experience module to allow student teachers to practise their emerging pedagogical skills, and to meet current professional standards, currently the Teachers’ Standards (2012).
Throughout the module, students will be encouraged to think critically about aspects of learning and pedagogy in order to help them to become confident, autonomous professionals.
The module aims to support students to develop as teachers by:
- enabling them to meet all areas of the Department for Education's Core Content Framework;
- auditing their existing knowledge and skills in the light of Social Sciences education requirements and developed strategies for on-going subject knowledge enhancement;
- developed a critical awareness of current debates about the content, value and purpose of Social Sciences within the curriculum and linked these to classroom practice;
- begun to develop an understanding of how pupils learn and make progress in Social Sciences
- enhanced their understanding and professional practice through research, reading, analysis and reflection;
- reflected on their achievements and identified areas for on-going professional development;
This placement module will allow you to make progress in your knowledge and practice of teaching in secondary schools. It is based on the University of Roehampton threads and stages approach to progression in professional knowledge, skills and attributes across the PGCE year (see programme specification for more details).
The programme is structured with the Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework in mind so that you ‘learn that’ and ‘learn how’ to become a teacher.
You will be supported by a school-based mentor and a University Lead Mentor to meet the Teachers’ Standards by the end of the course. This will include being able to plan and deliver lessons. At the same time, you will become resilient, resourceful, respectful; and reflective in your practice. You will be observed teaching once a week on placement (this will vary for part-time students) and be given feedback with actionable targets so that you can enhance your practice.
In addition to the two placements, you will also secure foundational learning and teaching skills through four intensive training and practice (ITaP) weeks which will focus on behaviour, oracy, subject pedagogy and assessment.
The module should be read in conjunction with your subject module to allow you to integrate theory and practice.
The module aims to teach you to:
- demonstrate the knowledge and skills set out in of the Department for Education's ITTECF;

Assessment is designed to support your development as a secondary subject teacher and your progress towards the Teachers’ Standards.
Tasks reflect real professional practice and are designed to build academic confidence alongside classroom skill.
- Subject curriculum thinking and subject pedagogy
- The ability to connect research, theory and school practice
- Planning, teaching and reflection on pupil learning
- Assessment and the use of evidence to understand pupil progress
- Inclusive practice and adapting teaching for the needs of different learners
Alongside this, successful completion of the placement component is required for recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status. You will receive regular formative feedback through mentoring, taught sessions, tutorials and structured guidance during placements.
How you will learn
Learning on the PGCE Secondary is shaped by the close relationship between university-based teaching and school experience
What you learn in taught sessions is connected directly to practice in the classroom, so you can try approaches, evaluate what works and build your confidence over time.
You will learn through:
- Subject-focused sessions that develop strong pedagogy and curriculum thinking
- Professional studies sessions that explore the wider role of being a teacher
- Structured asynchronous learning to support reading, subject knowledge and preparation
- Intensive training and practice periods focused on key teaching skills
- Placements in two contrasting school settings, supported by mentoring and regular feedback
Secondary education is rich and wide-ranging, and you will be encouraged to plan learning that connects with pupils’ lives and experiences. You will also explore how to use resources and experiences beyond the classroom where these strengthen learning in your subject area.
Across the programme, you will build confidence in areas such as behaviour for learning, talk for learning, feedback, assessment and subject-specific teaching approaches, with support to practise, refine and improve.
Roehampton offers a wide range of curriculum subject specialisms:
- Art and Design
- Business with Economics
- Computing
- Dance

- English
- Geography
- History
- Mathematics
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Music
- Physical Education
- Psychology
- Religious Education
- Science (Biology with Science, Chemistry with Science, Physics with Science)

In addition to your subject modules, you will also take Professional Studies modules, which will hone your expertise and effectiveness as a teacher. You will learn how to manage a classroom, how planning and preparation contribute to the effectiveness of your teaching, how best to work with parents and other adults, and gain an understanding of children’s behaviour.
Many of our subject rooms are set up to resemble classrooms, ensuring that from your first day at university you will be in a school environment. This is important for your full immersion into the school environment and familiarity with the way classrooms are structured, and the type of resources teachers need on a daily basis.
You will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check prior to starting the programme.
Careers
Graduates of the PGCE Secondary are highly valued by schools
Many secure posts locally, across Greater London and further afield, progressing into Early Career Teacher induction with strong subject knowledge and practical classroom experience.
The programme prepares you to teach your subject with confidence while developing the wider professional skills schools look for, including strong communication, effective behaviour and classroom routines, inclusive practice and the ability to reflect and improve. Over time, this supports progression into roles such as pastoral responsibility, subject leadership and wider curriculum development.
Our careers team is available to support you from the start of your studies until after you graduate. We will help you build your CV, prepare for interviews, and meet and learn from successful graduates working at the top of their careers. You’ll also have opportunities to work with our partners across London and beyond, and to attend a Roehampton jobs fair where you can find out about graduate opportunities and meet employers.
