Course overview

The QTS Assessment only route is designed for experienced and skilled teachers who wish to gain formal recognition as qualified teachers without undergoing additional training. 

This course provides a structured assessment process to assess candidates against the Teachers' Standards, ensuring they meet the requirements for QTS. 

You will demonstrate your teaching competence through lesson observations, portfolio submissions, and professional discussions.

If you are looking to join the AO route to QTS at the University of Roehampton you musty have a degree and be employed as an unqualified teacher. Your qualifications and expereince are crucial in determining your eligibility. It is key that your experience means that you meeting the Teachers' Standards  and you can evidence this.

To be eligible you must:

  • Be currently employed in a school as a teacher with full responsibility for teaching, assessment and planning
  • Have agreed with your school that they will fully support your application and the assessment process
  • Make sure your employer can confirm that you are meeting the Teachers’ Standards
  • Confirm that are willing to pay the fee for this route before the recommendation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status is made.
  • Provide evidence that you have a minimum of two years' experience of whole class teaching across the age range for your phase (3-7, 5-11, 7-11, 11-16, 11-18 or 14-19)
  • Provide evidence that your teaching expereince is in at least two different schools/settings
  • Provide evidence that you have taught across the ability range in your chosen age range.
  • Provide satisfactory references from two different schools that confirm the teaching experience that you have gained. They must detail the dates and nature of the expereince you have gained.   

Confirm that you hold the following qualifications:

  • GCSEs at level 4/grade C or above (or an equivalent*) in:
    • English Language
    • Maths,
    • Science (if you want to teach in primary).
  • A degree (300 UCAS points) awarded by a UK university or a recognised international qualification equivalent to a UK Bachelor's degree.
  • If you do not hold a degree from a UK University you will need to provide an ENIC statementto demonstrate the comparability of your qualification

Phase experience

For the primary phase (3-7, 5-11):

  • You need to be teaching the full curriculum including the core subjects of maths, literacy – phonics and science as well as the full range of foundation subjects such as geography, history, art and music. You can't be providing a subject specialism such as language, PE or music
  • You need to demonstrate experience of both ends of the age range:
    • For 3-7 you will need experience of EYFS and KS1
    • For 5-11 you will need experience of KS1 and KS2
    • For 7-11 you will need experience of older and younger classes within KS2

For the secondary phase (11-16, 14-19):

  • You need to have experience of teaching your subject specialism across the age and ability ranges:
    • For 11-16 you will need experience of KS3 and KS4
    • For 14-19 you will need experience of KS4 and KS5

Entry requirements

In order to apply for this course you must have met the following conditions:

  • A UK honours degree (2:2 or above)
  • A minimum of two years teaching expereince in at least two schools
  • Experience of teaching across the age range you wish to gain QTS in (3 - 7, 5 - 11, 11 - 16, 11 - 18, 14 - 18)
  • Be employed in a school that will support you during this process
  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 4/C or above (and Science for Primary)

In addition:

  • If your expression of interest meets the criteria for the course, you will be interviewed with your employer
  • You will be expected to take a literacy and numeracy test at the interview
