Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for Diversity in Study Abroad

From 2016-2019, Roehampton Abroad offered scholarships to continue to acknowledge the foundations of the University of Roehampton, supporting equal access to higher education for under-represented groups. Improving the diversity of students who study abroad is one of the key challenges for many institutions and is essential to continue to promote an internationalised welcoming campus community at the University of Roehampton.

In Spring 2022, the Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for Diversity in Study Abroad will be relaunched to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Southlands College. The scholarship will be awarded to five students in the form of a £1,000 tuition fee reduction.

Students studying for at least one semester on a Study Abroad programme (not exchange), with a minimum GPA of 2.8 (out of 4) are able to apply. Students may not combine this scholarship with a College Scholarship. Students must demonstrate as part of the application they come from an under-represented group within study abroad. Diversity Abroad offers suggestions as to what this may include, however, all participants who feel they are eligible are encouraged to apply.

Applications should be made online as part of the initial application to study at Roehampton. Applicants must submit a 500 word essay including evidence of the following:

  • How they represent diversity in study abroad
  • Commitment to their programme of study
  • How they will engage with and contribute to the University of Roehampton community
  • How the award will benefit them financially

A letter of recommendation will also be required from a member of staff at the student’s home university. This can be uploaded to the Study Abroad portal.

Scholarships are for one semester only and cannot be deferred. As part of the scholarship, students will be required to undertake the following activities:

  • Represent their home institution at the study abroad fair (if applicable)
  • Represent the University of Roehampton at their home institution study abroad fair once they have returned home.
  • Complete a blog post for the University of Roehampton blog and do an Instagram takeover.
  • Complete a student profile for the Roehampton Abroad website.
