Skills
Building surveying is one of the widest areas of surveying practice and they are involved in numerous aspects of property and construction, making for an exciting career.
The existing built environment has a huge role to play in sustaining our future; from the social capital generated by historic buildings and the use of traditional building materials; to retrofitting buildings to reduce carbon emissions and adapting them to be more climate resilient. Building surveyors have expert knowledge of existing buildings, whether historic listed buildings or modern concrete towers, or something in between. They are involved in the design and management of building refurbishment, and building inspections and surveys, all of which require sound knowledge of legislation and regulations. They also need to have exceptional communication skills.
You will learn from hand on activities including visits to buildings and construction sites and the input of industry professionals to your lectures and seminars, bringing the work of a building surveyor to life.
Learning
Teaching reflects the way Building Surveyors work in the real world, so you graduate career ready.
- Interdisciplinary modules working with architecture, construction and engineering students, replicating the workplace.
- Learning from real-life projects, which will give you the practical experience of working as a Building Surveyor.
- Formal and interactive lectures and workshops to ensure you graduate with the technical expertise you need.
Alongside strong technical skills, building surveyors need strong communication skills and the highest levels of integrity, all of which are embedded in the teaching and learning of the programme.
Assessment
You’ll be set authentic assessments, meaning that your projects, tasks and exercises will replicate the working world of building surveying.
This could include:
- Technical reports
- Drawings
- Lab reports
- Presentations
Between Years 2 and 3, you have the opportunity to apply for a placement and gain valuable real-world experience.
