Specialist facilities

The University of Roehampton has an array of specialist research facilities encompassing state-of-the-art biomedical, physiological, and imaging laboratories, e-sports technology, and world-class media, performance and conference and exhibition spaces, as well as extensive archives and collections, offering skeletal, education, dance, literature and religious resources.

Our Biomedical facilities include cell culture and in vitro imaging facilities, and an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, while our Nutrition and Health facilities feature a dedicated Gastrointestinal Glass Model system, sensory analysis tasting booths, and clinical suite for dietary intervention studies. These are supplemented by well-equipped Molecular Analysis, Radioactivity, Imaging and Morphometrics, and Computational Biology suites.

The Psychology Cognition Laboratory hosts four dedicated Electroencephalogram suites, a Repetitive Trans Cranial Magnetic Stimulator; Magnetic resonance imaging suite, and dedicated Eye-Tracking suite, along with two psychophysiological suites.

Our new Clinical Simulation Centre (officially opened in December 2019) simulates various clinical and community nursing environments and is fitted with patient simulators and video streaming equipment, and hosts ‘Froebel Ward’, a six-bed hospital ward with mock consulting rooms and patient homes.

Our world-class Sport and Exercise Physiology Laboratory features a purpose-built, walk-in climatic-controlled environmental chamber, BodPod, and an array of equipment for both laboratory and field-based physiological assessment. The Biomechanics Laboratory contains advanced optical motion analysis systems (Vicon and Peak Motus), Kistler force plates, and Biometrics Electromyography, Goniometers and 3D accelerometers.

The Department of Life Sciences hosts a large Medieval Skeletal Collection comprising human remains from over 300 Anglo-Saxon burials originating from a 9th-12th century cemetery in Godalming, Surrey, which are used for teaching and research by staff and students.

Our extensive Archives and Collections offer additional resources for education, dance, literature and religious studies.

Opened in January 2020, our brand new media hub, the Sir David Bell Building, boasts a 95-seat cinema, six studios (including new sound stage and film studio), two audio recording studios, two newsrooms, nine computer labs with extensive specialist IT provision, 13 cutting rooms/editing suites, and extensive exhibition, performance and event spaces.

The 350-seat Michaelis Theatre provides a first-rate, comprehensive performance space, along with an additional four dedicated dance studios, fitted with technology for sound and video recording, dance-computer interaction and video projection, and a fully-equipped drama performance research studio space.

The Roehampton Esports Arena (opened in October 2019) is equipped with 20 high-specification gaming PCs with professional-standard peripherals (i7-7700K/GTX 1080 graphic cards, 240hz monitors, mechanical keyboards with optical switches) and facilities for live streaming. The Arena hosts practice sessions, social events and gaming tournaments and provides among the best esports facilities of its kind in the country.

Elm Grove Conference Centre offers state-of-the-art conference facilities, with two floors of spectacular meeting, exhibition and event space for up to 140 delegates, technologically-advanced equipment and 31 guest bedrooms of hotel-style accommodation.
