Ambitious about your future? Want to enhance your career opportunities? Our unique Professional Experience year will blend academic skills with hands-on professional experience, so you can excel.

How does the Professional Experience Year work?

Designed alongside industry experts, this programme combines dynamic career pathways with flexible placement opportunities, so you’ll graduate as a prime candidate in the global job market.

After completing your first year of study on your chosen degree, you'll then complete a full year of Professional Experience training as part of your degree. This will give you real career experience.

If your degree includes a Professional Experience Year, you have the option of undertaking a 30-week placement or participate in the Career Immersion Programme on campus. This unique opportunity provides you with distinct pathways to develop your expertise.

See below for the structure of the programme and the relevant degree pathways.

Can I still complete an optional placement year?

Yes! If your chosen programme includes a Professional Experience Year, you have the option to undertake a 30-week placement. If you choose not to take the placement or are unable to secure one, you can participate in the Career Immersion Programme on campus.

Career immersion programme

Term 1

Career Immersion Course – the full year is worth 30 credits

In your first term you'll be on campus, taking part in workshops and seminars aligned to your area of specialism. Depending on your area of study, this may include presentations by employers, immersion weeks, and lecturers around the future world of work. You’ll also undertake a range of authentic assessments focused on challenges in industry. This first term is designed to give you the best possible experience to prepare for your career.

Term 2

In your second term there are three different pathways you can take, all of which offer work-experience.

You can select one of the following options (subject to availability and meeting selection criteria).

Complete a 15-week placement with an employer. Our partners Student Futures will help to source placement opportunities with local SMEs and established corporate networks, but students can also source their own placements. These placements cannot be guaranteed.

Work as a consultant alongside your peers addressing a real-world business challenge at the University of Roehampton, or at a local SME aligned to your degree. Address key strategic challenges and provide real-world solutions through your end-of-project report and presentation.

Complete a programme of career development with an external provider where you work on a brief from a client on a professional project. This is delivered alongside a network of mentors and detailed feedback, so you expand your career skills.
